Description
By Harvey at Figaholics on Facebook, Dec. 14,2015:
In 2010 a individual in Spain noticed that his neighbor's fig tree produced fruits whose outward appearance were similar to those of his own Napolitana Negra but, upon tasting them, the insides were different and the taste much richer than Napolitana. The variety name of the neighbor's tree is Unknown . This fig was later introduced to the U.S. by Trees of Joy and given the name Galicia Negra, indicating it was from the Galicia Region and a Black fig. 2015 was our third season growing our Galicia Negra tree and it produced about 30 outstanding fruits for us (a bird got the first and only fruit in 2014).
Recently I observed individuals posting on international fig groups photos of cuttings labeled as Galicia Negra which appeared to be in the handwriting of Senor Montserrat Pons (" MP ") of Spain (Mallorca). I wrote to MP and asked him for clarification. He could not confirm if the cuttings in the photograph I shared with him came from him but further said that a fig in the Galicia region called Miguelles Negros is also called Galicia Negra and has nothing to do with the fig which Trees of Joy introduced. My friend Bass at Trees of Joy received a similar explanation this morning and further told me that MP indicated he would discontinue using that name to avoid any further confusion. In the future, he will only label it Migueles Negros. He was unaware of the other fig using this name and was wondering why he was being asked for a fig by this name.
