Description
Niagara Black is a fig 'found' in the Niagara Falls, Canada area some years ago that has a very strong resemblance to Longue d'Aout, a well known fig. It is productive, with large size elongated figs with a very good, sweet 'figgy' flavor - it does not fit neatly into the usual flavor categories. It has some degree of cold tolerance with protection. If grown for Breba production, it can produce a fair number of large Breba .
Fig color can vary with sun exposure, ranging from brown and green to purple, but not a dark ' Black ' fig as the name would imply. The interior is red, as in the photos.
Leaves are generally 5 lobed, usually with additional small 'thumbs'. The leaf edges are usually serrated.
For me, this fig has become one that I really look forward to yearly. I have it inground in a low cordon shape, and after a few years it now seems to be well established and productive, regrowing well from the base and ripening a decent crop in my zone 6a. I have also grown LdA and to me, these two figs seem the same.
The first 'figs 4 fun forum' link in the list is from the person who helped to spread this fig in the community of fig lovers.
