Description
The mother tree comes from Calabria, Italy. Brought over from the old country 35 years ago by a cousin of Toni-Anne's late husband. Grows in-ground, unprotected in NYC, USDA Zone 7b. 2 crops. The first crop is sparse. The second crop is very prolific. Produces hundreds of medium to large green figs with strawberry-red pulp from mid-September through the first week of October. Common variety with no pollination required. No splitting in-ground; has not been trialed in pots.
Danny:
The mother tree is not planted in an ideal spot and the owner is not happy with the way it is growing. The tree does not receive enough direct sunlight during the growing season so it's a little leggy. But she still manages to put on a healthy Main crop . With proper placement, this variety would probably produce a generous Breba crop as well. The owner pointed out two locations that her late husband had planted trees for neighbors and both are huge. I observed bushy growth with large caliper trunks on both. Did not observe FMV on the mother tree or the sister trees. All of them have beautiful extra-large leaves on the lower portions of the trunks. See the pictures above. I cut open and took a picture of one unripe fig just to support the description. The owner says that the tree has never been winter protected. In my experience, this is one of those Unknown local cold- Hardy varieties that just grows like a weed. Toni-Anne's Calabrese Green would make a wonderful addition to any northeast collection.
