Last fall, I posted about a fig that I found in my neighborhood. The tree is not very big. Maybe 8’x8’ with a 4” diameter trunk. I spoke to the owner and he said he has lived there for around 10 years and he does not remember the fig tree when he first moved in but it could have been there since it’s growing in the hedgerow. It’s possible it was planted there and then got chopped down and later grew out. It could be a seedling too but I just don’t know so I decided to call it an Unknown .
Last fall, the Main crop was weeping honey out of every fig and the trees leaves were covered in it. It looked like tears to me so I called it Lagrimas, which means tears in Spanish.
We have had a very cool spring with only a handful of days over 70F and that has caused things to really be slow and the few Breba I have had so far we’re not worth eating. Bland mush pretty much.
I decided to go check out the tree tonight and was surprised to see ripe Breba all over!! Most were already over ripe and rotten but there were still quite a few that looked ready. As with the Main crop , these were just dripping honey too. I picked a couple and took them home where I was BLOWN away by their amazing color. The flavor was also very good. Honey, melon, grape and light berry. Very pleasant but not super concentrated. My whole family loved them and begged for more. I can’t imagine how these would have been with some actual heat to help concentrate the flavors!!
The owner isn't too keen on sharing so I wasn’t able to get many cuttings last year but I did get a few and passed them out to a few lucky people. I hope they are growing well for them!! This beauty needs to be tested to see if it’s common but worst case, it has quite a few Breba so it could be a great San Pedro .
