Description
Dels Ermitans is a rare and highly regarded fig variety believed to have originated in the Balearic Islands, Spain. Its name, which translates to "of the Hermits" in Catalan, hints at its historical cultivation, possibly by monks or hermits who valued it for its rich flavor and resilience. This variety has gained a strong reputation among fig enthusiasts for its intense berry-like sweetness, beautiful coloration, and excellent eating quality.
Dels Ermitans produces medium to large figs with a distinctive brownish-green skin that can develop purplish hues as it ripens. The interior is a deep, jammy red, filled with a dense, syrupy pulp that delivers a rich and complex flavor. The taste is often described as a blend of deep berry notes with a honeyed sweetness, making it one of the more sought-after figs for fresh eating. Unlike some varieties with noticeable seed crunch, Dels Ermitans has a smooth, melting texture that enhances its dessert-like quality.
This fig is known for its steady productivity, continuously setting fruit once it reaches maturity. However, it is a late-ripening variety, making it more suitable for growers in regions with long, warm growing seasons. In areas with shorter summers, achieving peak ripeness may be challenging, but in ideal conditions, the fruit quality is exceptional.
The tree itself is moderately vigorous but not overly aggressive in its growth, allowing it to be maintained at a manageable size while still producing an abundance of fruit. The figs tend to have a fairly tight Ostiole (eye), which helps protect against spoilage from insects and rain, increasing their suitability for humid climates.

Where to start with this fig... First off it's late, and when I say late I mean LATE. Located in Central NJ Zone 6B, I started shuffling mid-march and didn't start harvesting until mid-October, even after BMKK. This variety puts on a ton of fruit with many nodes having double figs. It's vigorous and tends to do well with the summer heat. It's one of the easiest varieties I've ever rooted from a Cutting . I've found you really need to let this variety ripen completely. Even when you think it's ready you should give it another few days. The fruit on the outside is not pretty, ton's of sugar spots. But the interior... WOW. A beautiful red pulp that is thick and full of syrup. It has a strong berry flavor, even in the late season. So would I recommend it? It all depends where you're located. This fig is really better suited for those with a longer season. Even with a head start via shuffle in 6b, a lot of the fruit will not ripen for me. Having a greenhouse would certainly help to extend the season. It's a delicious fig but it's more than likely to be one of your last to ripen.

The flavor is really good and very promising but it is not an intense berry flavor. It is mild berry with lots of honey and a well balanced sweetness. The skin is sweet and the texture is soft and smooth. When I let them start drying, they are significantly better but are still really enjoyable before that as well but nothing special until allowed to fully fully ripen.
