Description
What an incredible fig!!! UCR 187-25 takes the strong berry flavor of a caprified Black Madeira and, instead of being quite as intense as B/M, it instead incorporates a fruity kick alongside the Berry tones, that really gives it a full-spectrum of flavorful goodness. The skin is very sweet and it is just about half as chewy as a Black Madeira hide. It stays green when ripe, which will aid with camouflage from the critters. Thermalito is the closest variety that I've found to resemble it, but it ripens about five weeks later than Thermalito. It is the size of a golf ball, and weighs 46 gms. No splitting whatsoever, whereas the very next tree on the irrigation line, Sicilian Red, which receives the same amount of water, split badly. ...And the tree does not require the Wasp , as it's common, having been developed by UC Riverside specifically to replace the Smyrna Calimyrna trees commercially grown here. If I were forced to reduce my orchard from 400 trees, down to a half-dozen or so, then 187-25 would have to be one that I'd reserve a spot for in that lifeboat. Bluemalibu
