Description
The Black Celeste fig is a rare and intriguing variation of the classic Celeste fig, known for its dark purple to Black skin and its incredibly rich, sweet flavor. While traditional Celeste figs are typically light brown or violet, Black Celeste offers a deeper, darker exterior, which adds to its visual appeal and possible differences in taste.
The origins of Black Celeste are somewhat debated, with some growers believing it to be a natural mutation of Celeste, while others suggest it may be a closely related seedling selection. Its characteristics remain very similar to Celeste, with the main difference being its much darker skin tone and, in some cases, a more intense figgy sweetness. This fig is highly regarded in the Southern U.S., where Celeste has long been a favorite for its resistance to humidity and rain.

These figs were small, 8 and 9 grams, but I am not sure what to expect next year. They were sweet but not quite as intensely flavored as the Stallion (?Blue Celeste) figs grown in a pot which I reported on last week, but it may take another couple years to really know how they compare flavor-wise. Leaves look like a standard Celeste leaf
